Gustav Klimt is one of the greatest painters of the Art Nouveau period as well as one of the founders of the Vienna Secession, a movement which denounced more traditional and academic art in favour of fresh and modern styles. This painting is possibly Klimt's most famous work, achieving a balance between emotion and ornamentation. On the left is a man decorated in cold colours and geometrical angular patterns. These colours and shapes symbolise masculinity; contrasting to the warm colours shown through swirls and circles that the woman is dressed in, which represent feminity. Klimt's intensely experimental work explored the subconcious and emotional impulses and desires, as seen through the man and woman's embrace in The Kiss. Combined with this was Klimt's expressive use of line and dominant use of ornament which captured the avant-garde spirit, helping develop abstract aesthetics that followed this piece.
