During the last quarter of the nineteenth century, private companies in the Dutch East Indies began to issue their own means of payment for use on their plantations. Metal tokens were issued from around 1870, and banknotes were also printed and put into circulation from 1890. The peak of the issuance of these tokens and banknotes occurred around the turn of the century and covered a period of about twenty years, but some series date from a slightly later period, 1905-1915. The majority of this plantation money circulated in areas on the east coast of Sumatra.
