Chang is an orphan and is rescued by Tintin from a lake on his way to Hukow in the album The Blue Lotus. Laater Chang will rescue Tintin from the hands of the local police and together they live through the adventure of this story. In the end Chang is allowed to stay with Wang Chan-Yee, Tintin's Chinese friend.
Chang is inspired by Zhang Chongren (called "Chang Chong-chen" by Hergé). He was a student at the art acadamy of Brussels and a close friend of Hergë. Zhang introduced Hergé to Chinese culture and showed him techniques of Chinese art.
